Lady Spartans Fall in Semi Finals to Pioneers, 78-67

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team lost to C.W. Post in the semi final round of the ECC playoffs held at Bridgeport University on Saturday afternoon.  Briana Sloper had 18 points and 6 rebounds while Leane Urbancik added 16 points and 10 boards.  Senior Theresa Dowling added 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The Pioneers got out to a strong start opening the game on a 14-2 run as all five starters scored a basket in the opening 4 minutes.  Shpresa Liharevic hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws making the score 15-7 at the 11:36 mark. Urbancik added 5 points to bring STAC within three, 15-12.  A pair of free throws from Sloper made the score 18-16 at 6:53.  STAC continued to chip at the Pioneers lead eventually tying the game at 30 behind a 3-pointer from Natalie Catavero.  C.W. Post outscored STAC 8-3 in the final three minutes to take a 38-33 lead into the break.  Pioneer, Jenea Aiken led all scorers with 18 points at the half while Urbancik had 10 points for STAC. 

A three pointer by freshman Riley Harrington brought STAC within four, 46-42 at 14:13 in the second half.  However, the Lady Spartans would not get any closer.  STAC used a late 6-0 run, off a basket by Urbancik and two layups from Sloper, to come within six, 60-54 with 5:33 remaining.  Both teams exchanged baskets making it 62-56 with 3:58 left.  The Pioneers made one more field goals and then shot 13-14 from the foul line to finish the game ahead 78-67.

The Lady Spartans held a 44-42 rebounding advantage and had 3 fewer turnovers then the Pioneers but shot a mere 10-20 from the charity stripe and 36.6% from the floor to C.W. Post's 43.4%.

Aiken finished with a game high 35 points while Felicia Joyner added 22 points as the two combined for 7-10 from behind the arc.  Harrington finished with 9 points for STAC hooting 3-5 from behind the arc. 

STAC closed the season with a record of 21-8 and 17-5 in the ECC.
