The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat Molloy College, 61-55. Briana Sloper had 17 points and 6 rebounds while Theresa Dowling added 13 points and 7 rebounds. Riley Harrington and Leane Urbancik each added 9 points. Harrington was 3-6 from behind the arc for STAC.
Sloper scored a layup to give STAC a 2-0 lead to start the game. The Lady Spartans struggled as Molloy went on an 11-1 run to take an 11-3 lead at the 12:34 mark. STAC rattled off a 12-0 run of their own capped by triples from Harrington and Dowling. Harrington drained her second 3-pointer just before the half ended to tie the score at 23 apiece.
The Lions regained the lead off a pair of Ashley Addison free throws to start the second half. Dowling hit a jumper to give STAC a 28-27 lead at 16:43. Molloy regained the lead and held it until Shpresa Liharevic nailed a jumper at 10:45 to tie the game 36-36. Each team exchanged baskets until Dowling hit four consecutive free throws to give STAC a 42-40 lead with 7:41 left. Despite three more ties the Lady Spartans did not trail for the rest of the way.
STAC put together a 7-0 run in the final two minutes behind a pair of free throws from Sloper, a jumper from Bianca Kowgios and a three point play from Urbancik. Kowgios finished the game off with a pair of free throws to keep the Lions out of reach. The Lady Spartans beat Molloy on the boards 39-30. Kim Vareles added 5 rebounds for STAC along with 3 steals. Addison finished with 18 points for Molloy.
The Lady Spartans will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Dowling for a 5:00 game.
