The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team lost to Bridgeport University, 72-59. Theresa Dowling had 25 points, shooting 6-12 from the floor including four 3-pointers. Briana Sloper added 11 points and 9 rebounds for STAC while Kim Vareles added 6 points and 6 boards.
Dowling hit her second 3-pointer of the game at 9:07 in the first half to give STAC a five point lead, 18-13. The senior guard finished the first half with 20 points including 9-10 from the free throw line. The Lady Spartans trailed 36-32 at the break.
STAC opened the second half with back to back layups from Sloper to knot the game at 36. Dowling scored a layup to give STAC a 40-39 lead at the 17 minute mark. Leane Urbancik scored with 11:42 remaining to give STAC their final lead, 46-45. The Purple Knights used a late run sparked by 8 points from Kelly Keil to take a 60-50 lead. Keil finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds for UB.
Bianca Kowgios hit a jumper with 3:30 left in the game to bring STAC within six but the Lady Spartans could not close the gap. The Purple Knights held a 49-35 advantage over STAC including 22 on the offensive end.
STAC will return to action on Wednesday when the host Queens College at 5:30 PM.
