Lady Spartans Top Mavericks, 84-66

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat Mercy College, 84-66.  Shpresa Liharevic had 25 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds for STAC.  Briana Sloper added 20 points and 11 rebounds while Theresa Dowling had 18 points and 9 boards.

Liharevic scored 7 of STAC's 11 points in the opening five minutes to give the Lady Spartans an 11-7 lead.  A layup by Sloper with 5:32 left in the half gave STAC their largest lead to that point, 36-25.  Kim Vareles scored a layup to end the first half as the Lady Spartans took a 44-33 lead into the break.  Sloper had 14 points and 5 rebounds in the first half.

STAC opened the second half on a 12-5 run to take a 56-38 lead behind Dowlings third 3-pointer.  The senior guard connected on 5-8 field goals including 3-4 from behind the arc and 5-6 from the foul line while adding 6 steals.   

The Lady Spartans maintained a double digit lead throughout the half leading by as many as 27 off a pair of free throws from freshman Riley Harrington.  Harrington finished with 7 points and 4 rebounds.  Sophomore Bianca Kowgios had 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals for the Lady Spartans.  Leane Urbancik added 8 points and 3 rebounds. 

Ashley Borofsky had 17 points including 4-7 from behind the arc to lead the Mavericks.  Simone Williams and Jasmine Williams each added 11 points. 

STAC will return to action on Saturday when they host C.W. Post at 1:00 p.m.  Saturday's game represents STAC's Pink Zone Game and all fans are asked to wear pink to the game in support of breast cancer awareness.
