Lady Spartans Prevail Against Bears, 75-69

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat NYIT, 75-69.  Briana Sloper had 28 points and 6 rebounds.  Theresa Dowling added 10 points including 2-4 from behind the arc.  Bianca Kowgios and Shpresa Liharevic added 9 and 8 points respectively.  Kim Vareles tied a game high 11 rebounds.

Vareles drained a pair of free throws in the opening minutes of play to give STAC a 4-3 lead.  In a back and forth half, Liharevic hit a 3-pointer at 13:39 to put STAC ahead 12-11 and start a 10-2 run. Leane Urbancik scored a layup at 8:12 to put the Lady Spartans ahead twelve, 29-17.  NYIT went on an 18-10 run to finish the first half as STAC took a 39-35 lead into the break. 

Sloper scored back to back layups to open the second half and extend STAC's lead to eight.  The Bears would not go away quietly as Alex Ventuo drained her third 3-pointer to give NYIT a 48-45 lead at the 16:29 mark.  Dowling hit a jumper to give STAC a 50-48 lead that they would not relinquish at 13:41.  Sloper drained a 3-pointer that extended the lead to ten with 10:40 left in the game.  Dowling added back to back 3-pointers to give STAC a 71-62 lead with 3:32 to go and the Lady Spartans held on for the 75-69 victory.

The Lady Spartans beat NYIT on the boards 40-35.  Vareles added 7 points and 6 assists on the night.  Kowgios added 5 assists and 4 steals in 25 minutes of action.  Alexis Tyson had 21 points while Cierra Baker had 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Bears.

The Lady Spartans will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Molloy College for a 1:00 game.
