Lady Spartans Top Queens, 67-50

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball team beat Queens College, 67-50.  Briana Sloper had 18 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals for STAC.  Natalie Catavero added 11 points shooting 3-6 from the floor while dishing out 3 assists.

The Lady Spartans opened the game on a 12-4 run behind 6 points from Sloper.  Catavero hit back to back 3-pointers with 1:31 left in the half to give STAC a 38-23 lead.  Leane Urbancik added two free throws before the half ended to give STAC a 40-27 lead at the break.  Urbancik finished with 10 points for STAC. 

Sloper opened the second half with a layup to push STAC's lead back to 15.  A layup from Bianca Kowgios put STAC ahead 56-40 at the 10:50 mark.  Sloper scored on the next possession to give STAC their largest lead of the night 58-40 with 8:59 remaining in the game.  Freshman Briana Cook scored STAC's final field goal with 1:12 left to give them a 63-48 advantage.  Fellow rookie Riley Harrington drained 4-4 from the free throw line to finish out the game.  Harrington finished with 9 points and 5 assists. 

STAC held a 38-34 rebounding edge.  Kim Vareles led STAC with 8 boards; 5 on the offensive glass and finished with 6 points.  Amanda Barlett led Queens with 11 points while Cadie Chu and Christine Harnishfeger each added 10.

The Lady Spartans will return to action on Saturday when they travel to NYIT for a 4:00 p.m. game.
