Goldey-Beacom Outlasts Lady Spartans, 66-64

Playing their third home game in eight days, the St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team fell short against Goldey-Beacom College by a score of 66-64. Briana Sloper and Bianca Kowgios led the way for the Lady Spartans with 14 points each, but it wasn't enough to offset the outstanding effort of GBC's Irene Hudson, who posted game highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds.

The start of the contest was delayed an hour due to transportation issues causing the visitors to arrive late. Both teams struggled at the outset, trading leads on several occasions, with each squad leading by as many as five points. The tug-o-war continued into the second stanza until the Lady Spartans broke out on a 12-2 run to claim their largest lead of the evening at 49-42.

After the teams traded hoops, it was the Lightning striking on a 10-2 tear to reclam the lead. Sylvia Davis kept her STAC team in it with some sharp shooting, totaling 12 points, nine assists with just one turnover off the bench. With the contest on the line, it was Goldey-Beacom's Monica Burch hitting a lay-up and converting three of four free throws to give her team the edge. The Lady Spartans had a final possession with a chance to tie in the waning seconds, but Shpresa Liharevic's foul line jumper missed the mark to seal STAC's fate.

With the loss, St. Thomas Aquinas stands at 2-3 on the season and will now have a week off heading into a pair of road contests. The Lightning improved to 3-2 on the campaign.

The Lady Spartans now take their act on the road to face Wilmington University next Wednesday, November 30, and Lincoln, Pa. on Saturday, December 3, before returning to Sparkill to break the seal on the East Coast Conference schedule. St. Thomas Aquinas will host Queens College in a double-header, with the women's teams starting the action with a 5:30 tip-off. GBC will return home for their first of three straight, hosting Kutztown University on Saturday, November 26.
