Lady Spartans Topple Queens, 61-44; Capture Third Win in Last Four

Sarah Oliviera netted 14 points and Briana Cook added 12, leading four teammates in double-figures as the St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team prevailed at Queens College, 61-44. The victory was STAC's third in four contests and improved their record to 10-10 overall and 5-5 in East Coast Conference action. Queens fell to 1-19, 0-10 with the setback.

The evening started as a tough one for the Lady Spartans as the hosts, desperate to break into the win column in conference play, posted the first five points of the affair. STAC would take charge thereafter, recording the next nine straight points as part of a 22-4 torrent that would provide a lead that would not be threatened thereafter. St. Thomas Aquinas' lead would grow to as much as 18 before settling with a 31-15 halftime advantage.

STAC would extend the lead to as much as 21 points and the Knights would draw no closer than 15 as the visitors coasted to victory. Briana Sloper and Bianca Kowgios added 10 points apiece for the Lady Spartans. Queens' Nicole Caggiano would lead all scorers with 15 points while teammates Megan Lonergan and Caitlin Hopkins contributed 10 each.

St. Thomas Aquinas outshot the Knights from the field, with STAC posting 37% (25-67) while holding the home squad to 31% (15-48). The Lady Spartans held the rebounding edge, 38-34, and turnovers proved to be key as STAC yielded just 13 while forcing their foes into 26 miscues.

This evening's tilt was the Lady Spartans' second of a string of five out of seven on the road, continuing with a return to Aquinas Hall to take on Molloy in a 1:00 pm matinee this Saturday, February 4. They will then proceed to travel to Dowling College on Wednesday, February 8, with these contests as part of double-headers preceeding games featuring the men's squads.
