Sloper's 23 power Lady Spartans past Wilmington, 56-50

Briana Sloper scored a game high 23 points to pace the St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team past Wilmington University, 56-50, on Wednesday evening in New Castle, Delaware.

STAC led for almost the entire first half and when Sabrina Eggink connected with 4:04 left, the Lady Spartans held their second eight point margin of the stanza (28-20). However, Wilmington rallied to send the teams into the break deadlocked at 30 on two free throws by Amanda Walters with 46 seconds showing on the clock.

The second half featured four ties and three lead changes before the Lady Spartans took command with a 7-0 run late in the period. Sloper's bucket capped the run, giving STAC an insurmountable 53-46 advantage with 41 seconds remaining in the contest.

Riley Harrington chipped in with eight points and four boards while Bianca Kowgios dished out eight assists to help STAC improve to 3-3 on the season.

Wilmington (1-3) was led by Samantha Retas, who scored 12 points and Janasie Simpkins, who chipped in with eight.

The Lady Spartans return to action this Saturday, December 3, when they travel to face Lincoln (Pa) before breaking the seal on the 2011-12 East Coast Conference schedule when Queens College visits Sparkill on Wednesday, December 7. The women's teams take floor for a 5:30 PM tip-off followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30.
