Lady Spartans Hoops Cages Caldwell, 71-53

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rebounded from an opening-night setback with a convincing 71-53 victory over Caldwell College at Aquinas Hall. Briana Cook led all scorers with 19 points and Shpresa Liharevic posted 15 for the Lady Spartans, who improve to 1-1 while the Cougars sport the same record after a weekend split.

Less than 24 hours after STAC saw a late lead evaporate in a loss to Goldey-Beacom, the Lady Spartans got off to a strong start against Caldwell and never looked back. St. Thomas Aquinas carried a 30-22 lead into the halftime locker room and expanded to as many as 14 after the break.

Caldwell made a brief run to cut the deficit to eight, but Liharevic hit a pair of threes to expand the lead and the Lady Spartans never looked back. Cook went 7-for-14 from the floor to lead all scorers, while Liharevic hit three threes on the afternoon. Freshman Alyson Brennan also broke into double-figures with 12 points, with STAC yielding just eight turnovers for the game.

In other action in the ECC/CACC Challenege, Goldey-Beacom College finished with a perfect 2-0 weekend, outlasting University of the District of Columbia, 59-52. UDC dropped both tourney tilts to fall to 0-2, as the CACC captured three of the four contests.

The Lady Spartans will enjoy a week off before traveling to take on Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, November 17, before returing to Aquinas Hall to take on crosstown rival Dominican College on Tuesday, November 20 in a 5:30 start.
