Late Surge Pushes Post Past Lady Spartans Hoops, 67-51

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team dropped it's third straight in a 67-51 East Coast Conference defeat at the hands of LIU-Post at Aquinas Hall. Bianca Kowgios led the Lady Spartans with 15 points but it was not enough to stop her team from falling to 8-10, 4-4, while Post improved to 12-4, 5-3.

Post's defense created problems for the Lady Spartans early and Jalicia Connell's three-pointer capped an 11-4 run to give the visitors 17-8 cushion with under eight minutes left in the first half. A pair of Kowgios free throws would trim the margin to 24-20, but the Lady Pioneers remained ahead with a 30-24 lead after 20 minutes.

In the second stanza the battle remained tight with St. Thomas Aquinas pulling within just two points on a pair of occasions. A Nicolette Marciniak basket with 13:14 to play staked Post to a 43-39 lead when both teams ran cold, with a Marciniak jumper standing as the only points added to the board over the following three minutes.

Those missed opportunities proved costly for the Lady Spartans, as an Ashley Caggiano trey sparked an 8-0 burst to give the Pioneers their largest lead at 55-42 with eight minutes remaining. STAC would wage one final comeback, with a Sara Oliviera three cutting the deficit to 57-51 with 4:50 remaining, but Post would hold the hosts scoreless the rest of the way in scoring the game's final 10 points.

Shpresa Liharevic added 10 points for the Lady Spartans, while Marciniak was a force for Post with game-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Alexis Peters added 12 points and Caggiano chipped in with 10 for the victors.

STAC will travel to face Dowling College this Saturday, January 26, before returning to Aquinas Hall next Wednesday, January 30, when Molloy College pays a visit. The East Coast Conference action will tip off with the women's game starting at 5:30 pm, followed by the men's contest.
