Lady Spartans Win Dominican Hoops Tourney; Top Hosts, 67-52

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team earned the championship title at the Dominican College Tournament, topping the hosts by a score of 67-52. STAC's Kaitlyn McCue led all scorers with 14 points as the Lady Spartans improved to 3-0 overall, while dropping their nearby rivals to 1-3 on the season.

After the teams traded baskets early for a 4-4 tie, STAC reeled off a 19-4 outburst, giving them a commanding edge that would not be threatened for the rest of the afternoon. Kristen Olsen accounted for seven points in the uprising, with Briana Cook, Alyson Brennan, and KC Sokolski adding four each.

A 10-3 run by the hosts would bring them back with within eight points at 22-14, but that was as close as they would come, with the Lady Spartans embarking on a 13-0 tear, putting an exclamation point on a first half that would see the visitors hold a comfortable 45-24 cushion.

Dominican did chip away in the second half, trimming the margin to 58-46 with just over six minutes remaining, the STAC would hold the Chargers at bay. Brennan added 12 points while Cook poured in 11 off the bench to pace St. Thomas Aquinas. KC Jentzen posted 13 for Dominican, with St. Thomas Aquinas enjoying a 36-30 edge in rebounding.

The Lady Spartans will now have a week between games, returning to action next Saturday, November 23 to open the East Coast Conference schedule against the University of the District of Columbia. Action starts at 1:00 as the front end of a double-header, with the men's teams taking the Aquinas Hall hardwood at 3:00 pm.
