Lady Spartans Downed at LIU-Post, 71-58

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team fell by a score of 71-58 in an East Coast Conference tilt at LIU-Post. Briana Cook and Kristen Olsen led the Lady Spartans' offense with 14 points each as their team dropped to 11-12 overall, and 7-11 in ECC play. Post, currently the top seed in the ECC, improved to 19-5, 16-2 with the win.

Post wasted little time jumping on top, taking a 9-2 lead out of the gate and extending it to 17-8 after seven minutes of play. A three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Olsen bookended a 9-2 STAC run to draw the visitors to within 19-17. The Pioneers would respond with the next eight points to regain control, and finished the half with a 6-0 run to take a 39-26 lead into the locker room.

After seeing that deficit extended to 43-28, the Lady Spartans began to chip away. An "and-one" by Sam Burden capped a 7-1 run to bring STAC to within 51-44 with just under 10 minutes to play. Once again, Post would have the answer, quickly extending its lead to double-digits and never looking back.

Kaitlyn McCue added 12 points and nine rebounds for St. Thomas Aquinas, while Shayna Gatling paced LIU-Post with a game-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Chelsea Williams added 15 in helping the hosts secure the victory.

The Lady Spartans close out the 2013-14 campaign with a pair of contests at Aquinas Hall. On Monday, February 24, Molloy College pays a call with tipoff time set for 5:30 pm. The season concludes with Senior Day festivities as STAC hosts Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday, March 2, in a 1:00 pm start.
