Furious Rally Not Enough; Lady Spartans Edged at Molloy, 59-58

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to take the lead before falling at Molloy College, 59-58, in an East Coast Conference contest. Kristen Olsen posted a game high 19 for the Lady Spartans, who fell to 10-11 overall, 6-10 in the ECC, with Molloy improving to 12-11, 9-7.

After trimming an early five-point deficit to 10-9, the Lady Spartans saw Molloy reel off the next seven points to grab an eight-point margin. STAC drew to within four points before watching the hosts reel off the final six points of the first half to take a 30-20 lead into the locker room.

Molloy remained in charge, extending that margin to as many as 14 points, holding a seemingly-comfortable 51-37 edge with under eight minutes to play. Kaitlyn McCue started the comeback, posting the game's next five points from the foul line, and Olsen scored the next five to bring the visitors back to within four points.

An Olsen trey brought STAC even at 54-54 with three minutes to play, and a Sam Burden lay-up at the 2:03 mark put the Lady Spartans in the lead for the first time at 56-54. An Ashley Motrechuk free throw extended the lead to three points, but Kelly Guerrero would answer with a pair for the Lions to trim the gap to 57-56 with 1:21 left.

Motrechuk was fouled again with under a minute to play and, for the second straight trip converted one of two from the stripe. That would prove to be a big factor, as Guerrero answered from downtown with 36 seconds to go to put Molloy back on top. The Lady Spartans would have a pair of chances in the waning seconds, including a last gasp shot from Olsen, before falling short.

Burden added 15 points and Motrechuk 11 for STAC, with Megan Lonergan pacing Molloy with 16 and Guerrero tallied 14.

The Lady Spartans will play three of their final four games of the season at home, starting Wednesday, February 19 when NYIT visits Aquinas Hall for a 5:30 pm start. They will then travel to LIU-Post on Saturday, February 22 before closing out the regular season at home against Molloy on Monday, February 24 before hosting Roberts Wesleyan College on Sunday, March 2.
