Lady Spartans Storm Back, Stop Bridgeport, 51-47

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rallied from a 15-point first half deficit to take a 51-47 East Coast Conference victory at the University of Bridgeport. Sabrina Eggink recorded a game-high 17 points for the Lady Spartans, who improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play while Bridgeport fell to 2-7, 0-4.

Playing just their second game in the last 13 days, the Lady Spartans showed signs of rust early, with Bridgeport's Jennifer Kucukkaya scoring the first three baskets to give her squad a 6-0 lead. An Alyson Brennan free throw brought STAC to within 18-13 with 9:38 left in the half, at which point the visitors' offense would go missing.

St. Thomas Aquinas would go over seven minutes without recording a point, with the Purple Knights' 10-0 run opening up a 28-13 gap with just over two minutes remaining. Kristen Olsen's three-pointer with 2:10 left broke the drought, but the Lady Spartans still trailed by double-figures, 32-21, at the break.

Three minutes into the second stanza, UB would increase the lead to 38-25, but St. Thomas Aquinas would take charge from there.

With the Purple Knights maintaining a 43-33 edge with just under 14 minutes left, Alyson Brennan hit a pair of free throws and a basket to set the Lady Spartans off on a 13-0 run, with Eggink's trey at the 6:36 mark giving STAC its first lead of the night at 46-43. Shannon Holt's layup with 1:36 left brought the hosts to within 48-47, but Lexi Breheny's three foul shots in the final minute put the contest away.

In addition to Eggink's point production, Olsen added 11 for the Lady Spartans while KC Sokolski was strong on the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds. Shannon Holt led the way for Bridgeport with 10 points.

The Lady Spartans return to action this Saturday, December 21, facing Dowling College in an East Coast Conference tilt at Aquinas Hall. Game time is set for 1:00 pm, as the front end of a double-header featuring the men's team's squaring off at 3:00 pm.
