Lady Spartans Charge Past Bridgeport, 79-52

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team prevailed by a 79-52 count in an East Coast Conference game against the University of Bridgeport at Aquinas Hall. Kristin Olsen netted 12 points for STAC, which improved to 9-9 overall, 5-8 in the ECC with UB dropping to 5-14, 3-10.

Bridgeport looked to establish control early, utilizing a 9-0 run to grab an 11-5 lead. The contest belonged to the Lady Spartans from that point, however. A pair of Olsen treys sparked a 22-9 run to put STAC in a 27-20 lead. The decisive outburst came over the final 8:47 of the half, with the hosts holding the Purple Knights scoreless in a 19-0 run, grabbing a commanding 46-20 lead at the break.

Despite their huge deficit, Bridgeport battled back in the second half, pulling to within 18 points, but the Lady Spartans found their stride and opened the gap to as many as 31 before closing out the evening.

Balance was the name of the game for STAC, with Olsen standing as the only player in double-figures and 12 different players hitting the scoring column. Samantha Lane came off the bench to add nine points, with Kaitlyn McCue and Briana Cook adding eight each. Sam Burden was a force on defense with five steals and a game-high nine rebounds. Tiara Azia led the Bridgeport attack with a game-high 13 points.

The Lady Spartans will now take their act on the road for the next three games, playing at Dowling (2/8), Queens (2/12) and Molloy (2/15). They return to Aquinas Hall to host NYIT on Wednesday, February 19.
