Eggink Lifts STAC to Overtime Victory over Felician, 83-77

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team defeated Felician College, 83-77 in overtime at Aquinas Hall. Sabrina Eggink posted a game-high 26 points, including a game-tying basket with eight seconds left, and the first three field goals of overtime as the Lady Spartans improved to 5-1 with the non-conference win, dropping Felician to 1-7.

Both teams struggled from the outset, with Felician holding a narrow 2-0 lead after three minutes of play. STAC was unable to get the offense on track, with the Lady Spartans not hitting their first field goal until an Alyson Brennan layup nine minutes into play. Felician was in early foul trouble, however, and held just a 15-11 lead at that point.

Kristen Olsen caught fire from the perimeter, hitting three treys as St. Thomas Aquinas used a 30-13 outburst to grab a 37-28 halftime advantage.

After STAC extended the lead to as many as 11 points, the visitors took charge. Trina Plummer had 20 of her team-high 22 points after the break, spurring the Golden Falcons on a 23-7 charge to take a 53-48 lead.

Heading into the final minutes, the score remained tight, with Felician grabbing narrow leads only to see the Lady Spartans battle back. With the score tied at 61-61, Ashley Morris hit a pair of free throws to put Felician on top by two with 1:11 left, but Eggink's bucket with 55 seconds left again knotted the affair.

Sierra McDuffie's first field goal of the night was a big one, coming just seven seconds later to put the Golden Falcons up 65-63. Eggink was fouled with 34 ticks left, but made just one of two, but McDuffie would return the favor with 19 seconds left to keep the margin at 66-64, setting the stage for Eggink's elbow jumper that sent the game to extra time.

Eggink would reel off the first six points of the extra session, setting the tone for STAC's 17-point outburst over the final five minutes. Eggink was one of five Lady Spartans in double-figures in scoring, joined by Brennan (12 points), Lexi Breheny (11), Olsen (11) and Colleen Ames (10). STAC enjoyed a 47-39 rebounding edge, and hit seven three-pointers to aid the victory.

The Lady Spartans now have a gap in their schedule before returning to action when they travel to Pace University on Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 pm. They will resume East Coast Conference play in the following contest at the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday, December 18, at 5:00 pm as the front end of a double-header with the men's teams. After that, they will close out the 2013 portion of their schedule as the leadoff in another ECC twin-bill, hosting Dowling College on Saturday, December 21, starting at 1:00 pm.
