Win Streak Snapped at Three, Lady Spartans Fall at Dowling, 63-50

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team saw its three game winning streak snapped in a 63-50 East Coast Conference loss at Dowling College. Kate McCue led the Lady Spartans with 17 points but her team now stands at 5-4 overall and 2-1 in ECC play, with Dowling improving to 2-6, 2-1.

McCue's basket in the first minute broke the scoring seal on the contest, but it was the last lead the Lady Spartans would enjoy for the day. Kristina Surlan's three-pointer sparked the Golden Lions to a 7-0 run breaking a tie game with a 15-8 lead. McCue would break that streak with another hoop, but Dowling's 13-2 overall run was enough to help them to a 34-22 halftime advantage.

STAC showed promise coming out for half number two, with a KC Sokolski layup drawing the visitors to withing 36-30, but that's as close as the visitors would get. Dowling would again open their chasm with a 13-5 burst, but the Lady Spartans hung tough, with another McCue tally closing to 48-42 with over seven minutes to go.

After STAC came up empty in a pair of possessions with a chance to further trim the deficit, Dowling's Nicole Caggiano hit a three to create distance once again. Caggiano would end up leading all scorers with 20, with Kristina Surlan chipping in 17.

While STAC dominated the glass to the tune of a 40-22 count, the Lady Spartans were doomed by 28 turnovers in addition to 37% shooting (19-51) from the field. Conversely, Dowling posted an impressive 54% (28-54) from the floor.

The Lady Spartans are halfway through their string of four straight on the road, continuing at Queens College this Wednesday, December 17. They will then play a non-conference contest at West Point against Army on Saturday, December 20 and close out the year with a home tilt against Southern Connecticut State on December 31 at Aquinas Hall.
