Hawaii-Hilo Tops Lady Spartans in Trip Finale, 66-58

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball dropped its road trip finale, a 66-58 decision against Hawaii-Hilo. Kristen Olsen netted 19 points for the Lady Spartans, who dropped two of three on the trip to fall to 2-3 overally, with UHH earning its first win to improve to 1-3.

Playing their third game in as many days, the Lady Spartans battled the hosts early, with several lead changes before Alyson Brennan gave STAC a 12-11 lead with a pair of free throws. Hilo would embark on a 9-1 run, capped by a Charlotte Rode three to open a 20-12 lead, but Sam Burden would finish a 9-0 run for the visitors later in the session, with the teams settling for a 30-30 halftime draw.

Once again, the battle was engaged in the second half, with the lead tied on 10 different occasions overall. The final one came midway through the second half, when a McKenzie Mangino bucket drew Hawaii-Hilo even at 45-45.

A KC Sololski layup with 8:32 left would give STAC its final lead at 48-47, but a decisive 7-0 outburst by the Vulcans was enough to put them on top for good. Burden contributed to the Lady Spartans offense with 11 points, while Mangino paced the hosts with 15 points.

After the long flight home, the Lady Spartans open their East Coast Conference slate at Molloy College on December 3, with a 6:00 pm tipoff. They return to Aquinas Hall on December 6 for another conference tilt, hosting the University of Bridgeport starting at 1:00 pm.
