Stingy Defense Lifts Lady Spartans to 62-31 Victory at Molloy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team won its fifth straight with a 62-31 East Coast Conference decision at Molloy College. The conference opener for both teams saw the Lady Spartans improve to 5-0 overall, with Molloy falling from the ranks of the undefeated at 4-1. Kaitlyn McCue led all scorers with 17 points and Ruth Adams added 14 as STAC won its 10th straight regular season contest.

McCue netted six first quarter points as the Lady Spartans got to the break with a 14-5 lead. Molloy's defense kept STAC off the board for the first fiive minutes of the second quarter, but the Lions could not take advantage as the visitors held a 21-14 lead at half.

Coming out of the break, McCue was again the key, hitting the first two buckets while Alex Bertolino added two more in an 10-0 run, opening a decisive 31-14 lead. STAC's defense continued to be the story the rest of the way, as Molloy failed to score in double figures in any quarter. Just last Thursday, the Lady Spartans allowed the fewest points in a game in recent years with a 60-33 win over Concordia, which was topped holding Molloy to 31.

For St. Thomas Aquinas, McCue also led all rebounders with 12 as the Lady Spartans dominated the glass by a 44-29 margin. Kamala Thompson led the Lions with 12 points, though her team shot just 26% (12-for-46) from the field.

The Lady Spartans return to action this Sunday, November 27, when Southern Connecticut State visits Aquinas Hall for a 1:00 pm tip. That game precedes the men's contest against Stonehill at 3:00 pm.
