Henderson Pours in 25 as Lady Spartans Roll at NYIT, 75-51

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team soared to a 75-51 East Coast Conference victory at New York Institute of Technology on the strength of Adiya Henderson's game-high 25 points. The Lady Spartans snapped a three-game skid to improve to 14-7 overall and 8-4 in the ECC, with NYIT falling to 11-9, 5-7.

Both offenses were on fire early, as STAC's Sam Burden and NYIT's Margaret Knollmeyer each scored four straight points, with the visitors holding an 11-9 lead after just four minutes of action. The Lady Spartans' defense began to turn the tide and a pair of Ruth Adams free throws gave STAC an 18-14 lead after one quarter.

Henderson owned the opening minute of the second stanza with two hoops, a rebound, and a steal as STAC's lead expanded to 24-15. Julia Winnick added a layup and Jenna Erickson contributed five straight points as the Lady Spartans held a 37-27 halftime edge.

As she did the the previous quarter, Henderson staked STAC to a strong start in the third, scoring her team's first five points and adding a pair of rebounds and steals, as an 11-2 run blew open a 48-29 chasm with four minutes left in the quarter. The Lady Spartans cruised from there, with their lead only briefly dipping below 20 points in the final frame.

In addition to her 11-of-15 shooting from the field, Henderson grabbed eight caroms in a strong effort, with Erickson adding 20 points and Adams chipping in 13. Shanice Allen and Nina Vukosavljevic each added 17 for the Bears, who were outrebounded by a 43-29 margin on the afternoon.

The Lady Spartans play their next two games at home, both ECC tilts at Aquinas Hall. On Wednesday, Feburary 1, LIU Post pays a visit for a 5:00 pm start, while University of the District of Columbia heads north for a 1:00 pm tip on Saturday, February 4.
