STAC Tops Dominican, 70-57, as Lady Spartans Complete Weekend Sweep

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team defeated Dominican College, 70-57, to earn a weekend sweep in the Spartan Tip-off Classic. Jenna Erickson recorded her second straight 20-point game as the Lady Spartans improved to 2-0 on the season with Dominican falling to 0-2 with the loss.

After suffering a Saturday afternoon setback against Molloy, Dominican came out strong as Jasmine Gee opened the scoring with a three-point play, and the Chargers went on to hold the lead for the entire first quarter. Ciera Rivera scored four straight points to stake her squad to a 21-13 lead in the final minute, but Erickson's three-pointer in the waning seconds proved to be themomentum the Lady Spartans needed.

STAC took control early in the second as Adiya Henderson scored and Erickson hit another three to tie the game at 21-21, and Ruth Adams hit two straight jumpers to key a 22-5 run as the hosts opened a 35-26 advantage. Erickson would hit yet another three with nine seconds left as STAC went to the break with a 40-28 cushion.

Defense continued to rule the day in the third, with STAC's offense slowing down yet increasing its margin to 56-42 with 10 minutes left.

Dominican was not done yet, however, opening the final frame with a 10-2 run and drawing to within 58-52 with more than half a quarter to play. Henderson followed with a beautiful spinning lay-up, and Alex Bertolino scored her team's next six points as the Lady Spartans held off the visitors' charge.

Henderson followed her strong opener against Wilmington with a 15-point, six rebound performance, while Sam Burden's shutdown defense combined with her 10 points to add a significant contribution. Gee was the standout for the Chargers, finishing the contest with 18 points on impressive 7-of-9 shooting from the field.

The Lady Spartans return home on Thursday, November 17, hosting Concordia College before traveling to Nyack College on Saturday for another non-conference tilt. They will begin their East Coast Conference schedule with a tough test at Molloy on Tuesday, Novemeber 22. Molloy also competed in this weekend's Classic, with the Lions also earning a pair of victories.
