Henderson Scores 18 but #23 Lady Spartans Fall at Assumption, 72-60

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team dropped a 72-60 non-conference decision at Assumption College. The Lady Spartans, who entered play ranked #23 in the nation, saw their three-game winning streak snapped as their record dropped to 13-2 overall, while Assumption improved to 5-9 on the season.

Adiya Henderson took charge from the outset, scoring eight points in a game-opening 10-0 run for STAC. Julia Winnick's jumper opened the gap to 17-3 with 2:36 left in the first quarter, but the momentum was to take a strong turn against the visitors. Morgan O'Donnell hit the next four points and Assumption outscored the Lady Spartans in a 6-2 run to end the session.

Meghan Cramb and Morgan O'Brien hit consecutive threes to give the Greyhounds their first lead at 20-19 with 6:04 left in the half, but a Zaria Thomas trey in the final minute staked STAC to a 28-27 intermission lead.

Morgan O'Brien and O'Donnell hit consecutive long-range shots in a 9-0 Assumption run to start the third quarter, and an overall 14-3 outburst opened a 41-31 lead. Another Winnick three closed the gap to 55-49 with 7:25 left, but the hosts continued their hot shooting from the perimeter and that was as close as the Lady Spartans were to draw the rest of the way.

Henderson led all scorers with 18 points, with Erickson adding 11 and Winnick 10. O'Brien led three Assumption scorers in double-figures with 15 as the home squad was unconscious from deep, going 11-for-21 (52%) on the evening.

The Lady Spartans play their next two on the road, resuming East Coast Conference competition with a trip to the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, January 13, then going to NYIT on Wednesday, January 17. They will return to Aquinas Hall to host LIU Post on Saturday, January 20, starting a string of eight of their final 11 regular season games on their home floor.
