Win Streak Snapped at 10 as #7 Lady Spartans Fall to SCSU, 73-52

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team had its winning streak snapped at 10 games in a 73-52 setback at Southern Connecticut State University. The Lady Spartans are now 10-1 overall entering the Christmas break, while Southern Connecticut improved to 9-3 with the win.

Playing their fifth consecutive game on the road, it was apparent early on that it was not to be the Lady Spartans' day, as they missed their first five attempts from the field and were in an 8-0 hole near the midway point of the first quarter. A 10-2 run by STAC knotted the score at 10-10, but Abby Hurlburt's three-pointer capped a 7-0 answer to give the Owls a 17-10 advantage after ten minutes.

SCSU proceeded to score the first five points of the second stanza, and a dominant 20-4 outburst opened the chasm to 37-14 before the hosts settled for a 19 point margin at halftime.

St. Thomas Aquinas showed some life with Jenna Erickson posting 11 third-quarter points to cut the deficit to 56-42, and Zaria Thomas added a hoop along with an Erickson free throw to trim the score to 56-45 with just under nine minutes to play. That was as close as they were to come, as Hurlburt caught fire again in spurring Southern Connecticut to a 12-2 run, essentially putting the affair out of reach.

Erickson paced STAC with 16 points, while Hurlburt led all scorers with 24 while teammate Africa Williams chipped in 21 for the Owls.

The Lady Spartans return to action with a trip to Pace University on Saturday, December 30, before finally returning to Aquinas Hall to host Mercy College in an East Coast Conference tilt on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. They will then play the following four away from home as they are 4-1 in their current string of 10-of-11 games on the road.
