STAC Surges Past Caldwell for 67-47 Victory

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team soared to a 67-47 victory over Caldwell University in a non-conference battle. STAC improves to 5-1 overall with Caldwell slipping to 0-3. The game was also a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament East Regional quarter-final, won by St. Thomas Aquinas by a 61-45 final.

Julia Winnik hit a pair of three-pointers and Ruth Adams added another as part of a game-opening 11-0 run, with the Cougars being held scoreless over the first four minutes of play. STAC then went cold as a 7-0 Caldwell run closed the deficit, though the visitors maintained a 19-12 advantage after 10 minutes. The Cougars drew to within 19-16 on a Paula Dits layup, but a 10-2 answer closed the first half with the Spartans on top at 32-20.

Another 11-0 burst by STAC late in the third all but put the game out of reach, opening a comfortable 50-27 gap, with the lead expanding to as many 27 points as the Spartans cruised to their second straight win.

Adams led all scorers with 15 points with Emily Preston adding 11 to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. Alessia Smaldone came off the bench to lead the hosts with 13 points, with Dits chipping in 10 points and 10 boards.

The Spartans play three of their next four games at home, returning to the Aquinas Hall hardwood to take on Goldey-Beacom on Saturday, December 1 at 1:00 pm. They open their East Coast Conference slate at Mercy on December 5, before returning for a home game against Bridgeport on December 8, also at 1:00 pm.
