Fourth Quarter Barrage Lifts Women's Hoops to 64-53 Win over St. Michael's

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rallied to a 64-53 victory over St. Michael's College in the STAC Tip-off Classic at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans improved to 2-0 in completing the weekend sweep, with St. Michael's slipping to 1-1.

STAC jumped to an early 8-2 lead and led by a 15-12 count after one quarter, but the Purple Knights closed with a 7-0 run to take a 33-28 advantage into halftime. Both offenses struggled mightily in the third, with each team registering nine points and St. Michael's maintained that five point lead into the final session.

After scoring 20 points in the opening victory over Nyack, Ruth Adams had been held in check with just one field goal entering the final quarter, but that session belonged to the redshirt junior. Adams completely took charge with an amazing 16 points in an 18-1 Lady Spartans run over the first 3:50, giving the hosts their biggest lead at 55-43. That margin ballooned to as many as 16 points as STAC scored 27 over the final frame to cruise to the win.

Adams led all scorers with 18 while Emily Preston added 14 and Kellyann Averall had a strong night with 13 and a team-high seven rebounds. Emily Ferreri set the pace for the Purple Knights with 13.

The Spartans will play a non-conference tilt at Bloomfield College on Tuesday before taking off for Hawaii, with the trip encompassing games against Hawaii Pacific on November 16 and Chaminade on November 20.
