The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team fell to a 75-67 defeat in an East Coast Conference contest at Roberts Wesleyan College. The setback was the second in three days for the Spartans after an eight-game winning streak, as they slip to 18-5 overall and 10-2 in the ECC while RWC improved to 14-9, 6-6.
STAC found itself in an early 15-8 hole, but a late three by Ruth Adams drew the deficit to 15-13 after one quarter. The Redhawks scored the first six points of the second to open an 8-point advantage and opened the gap to 30-19 on a three-pointer from Taryn Wilson with under four to play in the half. Roberts went into intermission with a 32-24 lead but the Spartans battled back in the third.
Threes from Zaria Thomas and Lexi Huertas hit threes as STAC exploded on a 23-6 run over the first eight minutes of the third quarter and held a 47-40 lead through three before running into trouble from the Redhawks. The visitors' lead remained at 51-44 two minutes into the final session and still held a 62-58 lead with just over three minutes left. Wilson scored four straight to put the hosts back on top, but Huertas answered with 2:43 left to give the Spartans a 64-63 edge.
Sara Nady hit a pair from the line and Wilson struck from deep with 1:44 to put RWC on top at 68-64, and Emily Miller hit four straight free throws in the final minute to secure the win. Adams led all scorers with 19 points, with Missy Sadler (14), Huertas (13) and Thomas (12) leading the attack for STAC. Wilson was the standout for the Redhawks, posting 18 points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Spartans close out their string of four straight on the road this Wednesday, February 19, as they travel to face Queens College in ECC action. They return to Aquinas Hall to host New York Tech on Saturday, February 22, with tip set for 1:00 pm.
