Spartans Fall from Unbeaten Ranks with 64-51 Defeat by Bentley

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team fell to a 64-51 defeat in a non-conference contest with Bentley University at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans had their winning streak snapped to fall to 7-1 overall, with Bentley improving to 5-3 with the win. Ruth Adams had 14 points and Missy Sadler totaled 12 to pace STAC, while Megan Lewis and Monica Viapiano tied for game high with 15 each for the Falcons.

Bentley set the tone early as Lewis hit the first two buckets of the afternoon - one from beyond the arc, to grab a 5-0 lead in the first 89 seconds. Maddy Springfield's three opened the lead to 20-9, but the Spartans scored the final five points of the session to trail by a 20-14 count after one quarter. STAC trimmed the gap to 25-22 on a Lexi Huertas three-point play with 5:17 left in the half, but Katie Merriggioli's three-pointer capped a 7-0 answer as the Falcons opened a 32-22 advantage.

St. Thomas Aquinas struggled with the visitors' defense, posting just six points over the first seven minutes of the third, opening a 48-31 lead that the Spartans would not threaten, drawing no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

The Spartans will now enjoy a lengthy break while gearing up for the start of the East Coast Conference schedule, which sees Roberts Wesleyan College pay a visit to Aquinas Hall for a 5:30 pm tip on Friday, December 13. They then host Daemen College for a 1:00 pm Sunday matinee on December 15, with both games being the front end of double-headers, to be followed by the men's teams squaring off.
