STAC Wins 4th Straight in 71-42 Triumph over Queens

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rolled to a 71-42 victory over Queens College in an East Coast conference battle at Aquinas Hall. The win was the fourth straight for the Spartans, who improve to 14-3 overall and remain in sole possession of first place in the ECC with a perfect 6-0 mark, while Queens dropped to 5-12, 2-5.

Coming off three straight victories over regionally-ranked opponents, the Spartans (ranked #4 in the East by D2SIDA) picked up where they left off, jumping in front early and never looking back. Sarah Scerbak and Zaria Thomas hit three-pointers to key a game-opening 12-1 run, holding Queens without a field goal for over five minutes from the start of the game.

That led to a 19-9 STAC lead after one quarter, and Lexi Huertas opened the second from deep to start a 7-0 run, as the hosts opened a 26-9 gap just two minutes into the session. By the time Ruth Adams nailed a jumper in the final seconds, the Spartans had opened a decisive 42-17 lead, with the gap extending to as many as 31 points in the dominant win.

Adams and Emily Preston tied for the game high with 17 points each, and Adams added five steals to pace St. Thomas Aquinas. Tayanee Peay was the only Knights' player to reach double-figures, netting 11 points.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, January 22, hosting the University of Bridgeport for another East Coast Conference tussle, with tip set for 5:30 pm as the front end of double-header play, to be followed by the men's team's squaring off in a first place showdown at about 7:30.
