STAC Women's Basketball Drops 57-35 Decision at AIC

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team fell to a 57-35 defeat at American International College. With the loss, STAC drops to 0-2 overall with AIC improving to 2-0 with a sweep of the season-opening home-and-home series.

Just 24 hours after the teams squared off at Aquinas Hall, with AIC taking a 44-41 win, the return match was held in Springfield, Mass., and the Yellow Jackets took charge early. Alexa Huertas hit a three-pointer to give the Spartans an early 3-0 lead, but AIC's defense clamped down from there to grab a 16-7 advantage after one quarter.

Stefania Georgiou's free throw with 6:23 left in the half closed the gap to 18-12, but those would be STAC's last points through intermission, with the hosts opening a 24-12 gap. Katie Bischoping's three-pointer brought the visitors to within 24-15, but an 11-5 burst reestablished breathing room for the Yellow Jackets. Holding a 41-25 lead through three quarters, the hosts reeled off the first 10 points of the final frame to pull away for the win.

Nora Young led the way for AIC with a game-high 13 points, while Huertas and Karolina Jaruseviciute posting six each for STAC, with Angelique Holguin tying for game high with eight rebounds.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, February 3, hosting Molloy Colllege in their East Coast Conference opener, with game time at 6:00 pm.
