STAC Battles Back and Holds On for 52-44 ECC Victory at Mercy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rebounded for a 52-44 victory in an East Coast Conference rematch at Mercy College. STAC now stands at 5-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play, with Mercy falling to 1-6, 1-6. Though Mercy clamed the victory in Wednesday's game, St. Thomas Aquinas won two of three to take the season series.

After a slow start cost the Spartans in last night's game, the visitors jumped on top early as Julia Reggio and Chanel Brodeur-Muir each dropped threes to propel their team to an 8-2 advantage, leading to a 16-9 margin after one quarter. STAC's defense owned much of the second but didn't expand their lead until Reggio hit again from deep with 6:44 left in the half, and Mercy did not score for the first 5:25 as the gap hit 23-9. With the score 27-11, Katie Wall hit a couple of late three-pointers for the Mavericks to claw back to 27-17 at half.

Katie Bishoping's jumper with just over a minute to go in the third staked the visitors to a 39-26 cushion but Asha Talib's late three capped a 5-0 burst to make the tally 39-31 entering the final frame. Though a pair of Lexi Huertas free throws midway through the quarter made the score 43-32, Mercy rebounded with a 9-2 run, with Wall's layup cutting the deficit to 45-44 with 1:35 still to play. The Mavericks never had a chance to grab the lead, however, as Brodeur-Muir sank a pair on the next possession and the Spartans hit 7-of-10 at the line in the final 90 seconds to secure the victory.

Brodeur-Muir came up big for St. Thomas Aquinas with a career-high/game-high 17 points, with Reggio pouring in 16 and Huertas adding 11. Wall was the top scorer for the hosts with 14.

The Spartans hit the road to close out the regular season with a weekend set at Daemen College on Saturday and Sunday, February 27 and 28, with both games starting at 12:00 noon. They will then participate in the ECC Women's Basketball Tournament which begins on Tuesday, March 2.
