Spartans Hold off Mercy Charge in 63-46 ECC Win

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rolled to a 63-46 victory over Mercy College in an East Coast Conference contest against Mercy College at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans have now won three of their last four overall to improve to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in ECC play while Mercy remains winless at 0-3, 0-3.

Several lead changes punctuated a tightly-defended first half, with Julia Reggio and Stefania Georgiou converting in the final minute to have the hosts a 31-27 lead at halftime. STAC carried that momentum into the third quarter, as Katie Bishoping scored the first five points in a 14-0 run - 18-0 including the second quarter - as the Spartans suddenly held a 45-27 lead with under four minutes left.

Katie Wall finally got the Mavericks on the board from downtown with 3:15 to play in the frame, and Mercy scored the final four points to trail 49-34 with 10 minutes to go. As the Spartans did in the previous stanza, Mercy continued that run as Jamie Waldron's layup narrowed the gap to 50-44 midway through the quarter. St. Thomas Aquinas turned up the defensive pressure from there, holding the visitors scoreless for four minutes as Lexi Huertas hit a jumper and Reggio contributed a three-point play as a 9-0 run put the game out of reach.

Huertas had game-highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Reggio poured in 15 and Victoria Kurisko scored 12 in the win, while Wall amassed 15 for Mercy.

The Spartans now close out the regular season with five straight on the road, starting with a weekend set at Molloy this Saturday and Sunday, February 20 and 21. They then head to Mercy for a rematch next Wednesday, February 24, before closing with a pair at Daemen.
