Kurisko's Late Hoop Provides Revenge as Spartans Ride Late Surge to 60-57 Victory over Roberts Wesleyan

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team rode a dominant fourth quarter to a 60-57 comeback win in an East Coast Conference contest with Roberts Wesleyan College at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans have now won 2-of-3 to improve to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the ECC, whle Roberts Wesleyan now stands at 3-5, 1-3.

A tightly-contested first quarter saw Roberts Wesleyan claim a narrow 13-11 lead on a late Danielle DiCintio jumper and the second was equally close as Kaitlyn Watrobski hit a pair of free throws to put STAC on top, and Georgia Haverlock's buzzer-beater put the Redhawks in a 26-25 halftime lead. Chanel Brodeur-Muir scored to put the hosts on top to start the third, but a 14-2 run gave RWC a 40-29 with just over three minutes on the clock.

That lead would expand to as many as 12 and the Redhawks looked to be in control at 46-35 with 10 minutes to play. An exchange of baskets over the first three miutes of the final frame kept the deficit at 11 before the Spartans caught fire. Lexi Huertas jump-started the effort with a three-pointer, and Brodeur-Muir and Victoria Kurisko added buckets as a 7-0 run closed the gap to 51-47 at the midway point.

Demitra Gkizani converted a three-point play to extend Roberts Wesleyan's lead to seven, but Julia Reggio sank a pair at the line to turn the tide back to the home squad. Trrailing 55-49, Huertas came up big again from deep, and Kurisko added two from the line to make the score 55-54 with 1:27 remaining. Kurisko crashed the glass for an offensive board and was fouled, hitting two more to give STAC a 56-55 lead with just :48 left. Gkizani quickly answered with :31 left to put the Redhawks back on top, with the Spartans calling time.

Out of the break, Kurisko took the inbound and dribbled to her right, absorbing contact as her baseline floater hit nothing but net, with the visitors now calling time out with just :26 left. Paige McCormack backed her way in for the potential game winner, but Kurisko came through on the defensive end as well with a steal and pair of foul shots to lift St. Thomas Aquinas to a stirring victory.

Huertas led STAC with 19 points while Kurisko chipped in 14 and Angie Holguin posted 10. Gkizani set the pace for Roberts Wesleyan with 17. After going just 2-for-8 from the line in Saturday's tough loss, STAC shot a torrid 17-of-19 (90%), with Kurisko's 6-for-6 leading the way.

The Spartans play the final scheduled home game of this abbreviated season on Wednesday, February 17, when Mercy College visits Aquinas Hall for a 6:00 ECC tip. STAC with then play its final five games on the road before heading to the East Coast Conference Tournament.
