Huertas Nets 16 Points but STAC Falls Short vs. Roberts Wesleyan, 68-64

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's basketball team fell to a tough 68-64 defeat in an East Coast Conference battle with Roberts Wesleyan College at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans now fall to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in ECC play, with Roberts Wesleyan improving to 3-4, 1-2.

Coming off a week-long layoff, STAC's offense struggled in the early going, being held scoreles for over six minutes as the Redhawks opened a 9-0 lead. Victoria Kurisko finally broke the goose egg with 3:44 left, and Kaitlyn Watrobski and Katie Bischoping drilled back-to-back threes as an 8-0 answer brought the hosts within one. Huertas added consecutive threes as part of a quarter-ending 8-0 run, putting the Spartans on top at 18-10 through 10 minutes.

Huertas kept the hot hand with two more early threes in the second as the Spartans reached their highest lead at 28-17 midway through the second. This time, it was RWC with the answer, battling back to a 34-29 halftime deficit. Madison McCormack and Toni Neeley-Primus opened the second half with consecutive treys to put the Redhawks back on top, with several lead changes ensuing before St. Thomas Aquinas carried a 52-49 edge into the final session.

With foul trouble mounting, the Spartans extended their lead to 64-56 as Watrobski hit from deep and Bischoping added another bucket with just 3:19 left. Roberts would take charge from there, as Georgia Haverlock scored the next five points and Taryn Wilson connected for three to give RWC a 65-64 left with just under a minute remaining, as the Redhawks closed with a 12-0 run to record their first ECC win of the season.

Huertas led all scorers with 16 points, with Bischoping adding 13 and Watrobski posting 12 for STAC. Haverlock came off the bench to lead RWC with 15.

The teams wrap up their weekend set at Aquinas Hall on Sunday, February 14, with game time set for 2:00 pm. They then host Mercy for the regular-season home finale on Wednesday, February 17, at 6:00 pm.
