Women's Basketball Earns Western New York Weekend Sweep with 74-56 Victory over D'Youville

Buffalo, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team completed a weekend sweep of Western New York teams with a 74-56 victory over D'Youville University on Sunday afternoon at the College Center Gymasium.

STAC improves to 11-14 and 10-6 in the ECC on the season, while D'Youville drops to 11-11 and 6-10 in conference play.

Alexa Huertas paced the Spartans with 28 points, while Chanel Brodeur-Muir picked up 10 points and Sarah Ericson pulled down 11 rebounds. Sara Pfeiffer (16 points) and Anna Jankovic (10 points) led the Saints.

STAC shot 42.4 percent from the field (25-59), while D'Youville shot 35.0 percent (21-60) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Victoria Kurisko led the Spartans with five assists on the afternoon.
  • Alexa Huertas made 10 of her 18 field goal attempts, with 5-of-10 going in from beyond the arc, while Chanel Brodeur-Muir went a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded D'Youville 49-32 in 40 minutes of action, with Sarah Ericson grabbing 11 boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up four steals in the contest, with the Saints turning the ball over on 10 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over D'Youville: Points off of Turnovers (16-8) and Second Chance Points (15-4).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • St. Thomas Aquinas jumped out to a 9-0 lead, before D'Youville scored its first points at the 4:12 mark of the first quarter. The Spartans held a 17-7 advantage at the end of the stanza.
  • The Spartans outscored the Saints 21-6 in the second quarter, building a 38-13 margin on the scoreboard at the halftime break.
  • Alexa Huertas led all scorers with 15 first half points for STAC, while Jaelyn Vleer-Elliott and Sofie Fuglsang each had four points for D'Youville.
  • STAC remained in full control of the contest, following the break with Huertas putting up 10 points in the third quarter to give the Spartans a 56-29 advantage through 30 minutes of play.
  • In the fourth quarter, St. Thomas Aquinas led by as much as 33 points (62-29) early on. However, the host Saints would make a late run, cutting their deficit to 16. Head Coach Bill Cleary would rotate his starters and reserves throughout the frame in order to keep D'Youville at bay, as the Spartans would pick up its third straight triumph.
