Four Starters Score in Double-Figures as Women's Basketball Downs Queens College 88-41 on Senior Day

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team saw four starters score in double-figures on Saturday afternoon, as the Spartans rolled to an 88-41 Senior Day victory over Queens College at Aquinas Hall Gym.

STAC improves to 9-14 and 8-6 in the ECC on the season, while Queens drops to 3-17 and 2-11 in conference play.

Prior to the contest between the Spartans and Knights, STAC honored its graduating senior class; Sarah Scerbak, Alexa Huertas, Stefania Georgiou, Zaria Thomas, Victoria Kurisko and Chanel Brodeur-Muir with on-court ceremonies, which included the athletes' families, teammates, coaches and college administrators.

Once the game got underway, Erin Leary and Chanel Brodeur-Muir led the way on the stat sheet for the Spartans, posting 17 points each, while Victoria Kurisko (12 points) and Sarah Ericson (11 points) also scored in double-figures.

STAC shot 66.1 percent from the field (39-59) in the conference contest, while Queens shot 29.6 percent (16-54) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Victoria Kurisko led the Spartans with five assists on the day.
  • Erin Leary made eight of her 13 field goal attempts, while Chanel Brodeur-Muir went 8-for-9 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded Queens 39-20 through 40 minutes of action, with Sarah Ericson grabbing seven boards.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up nine steals in the contest, with the Knights turning the ball over on 14 different occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Queens: Points off of Turnovers (17-5), Second Chance Points (13-5), Points in the Paint (42-8), Fastbreak Points (12-2) and Bench Points (22-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Spartans opened the first quarter with a slim 20-15 advantage on the strength of seven points from Erin Leary and six points from Alexa Huertas. Nora Gabel was able to record six points for Queens College.
  • In second quarter action, STAC quickly doubled their lead at 30-15 and continued to score at will, going up by as much as 23 points (44-21), before closing the frame with 44-23 advantage at the intermission.
  • Chanel Brodeur-Muir paced the Spartans with 10 first half points, while Nora Gabel led all scorers with 12 points for the visiting Knights.
  • Following the halftime break, STAC continued its hot shooting, extending its lead with a 10-2 run, to push the score to 54-25. Queens would attempt to cut their deficit late in the quarter, but the Spartans would keep their foot on the proverbial gas pedal, continuing to put up points. St. Thomas Aquinas would lead Queens 63-33 through 30 minutes of action.
  • The onslaught would continue in the fourth quarter, with the Spartans posting 25 points in the final stanza to only eight by the Knights. Head Coach Bill Cleary would empty his bench late with the game well in hand. All 14 players who were dressed for Saturday's contest made an appearance for STAC.
