PREVIEW: #2 STAC Battles #6 Queens in ECC Women's Basketball Semis Saturday

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team opens the 2022-23 post-season, meeting #6 seed Queens College on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm at Lumsden Gymnasium (Daemen University) in Amherst, New York.

The Teams - St. Thomas Aquinas - The #2 seeded Spartans received a first-round bye and enter tournament play with a record of 20-7 overall, 12-4 in the ECC, looking to win its first ECC Tournament title since 2018. Three Spartans punctuated the All-Conference awards, with Sarah Ericson (12.5 ppg, 9.9 rpg & 3.5 apg) earning Player of the Year accolades and both Ericson and teammate Erin Leary (14.2 ppg & 7.6 rpg) taking First Team honors, while Alex Huertas (8.7 ppg) took home Third Team kudos.

The Teams - Queens - The #6 seeded Knights advanced to the semis on the strength of Wednesday's 57-52 road victory over Mercy. Chelsea Reeves led the way for Queens with 17 points and averages 12.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Cecilia Lapertosa (13.1 ppg & 7.3 rpg), and Brianna Davis (10.5 ppg & 6.0 rpg) contribute to a tough lineup as the Knights currently rank seventh in team scoring (56.7) and sixth in defense (62.3).

Season Series (STAC wins 2-0):

January 18, 2023, STAC 60, @Queens 50 - Strong team defense helped fuel a second half rally for the Spartans. Erin Leary led the way for the maroon and gold, posting a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. STAC only allowed 14 total points to the Knights in the third and fourth quarters.

February 9, 2022 - @STAC 69, Queens 46 - In the rematch in Sparkill, Alexa Huertas connected on eight three pointers, as STAC earned the regular season series sweep. Huertas led the way for the Spartans with 24 points, while teammate Sarah Ericson pulled down 19 boards.

What's Next? - The winner of this game will advance to the ECC Tournament Final on Sunday, March 6, at 12:00 pm at Lumsden Gym. They will take on the winner of the Saturday noon semi-final between #1 Daemen and #5 Staten Island. Like STAC, Daemen earned a bye into the semis, while Staten Island advanced with a 84-73 road victory over the University District of the Columbia on Wednesday night.
