Women's Basketball Drops Third Straight with 82-78 Overtime Loss To Roberts Wesleyan

Rochester, N.Y. - Despite receiving double figures in scoring from five Spartans, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team dropped its third straight contest, an 82-78 overtime decision to Roberts Wesleyan University on Sunday afternoon at the Voller Athletic Center in Western New York.

STAC slips below the .500 mark at 7-8 overall and evens its ECC record at 2-2. Meanwhile Roberts Wesleyan improves to 5-7 and 1-3.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Bailey Chapman led the maroon and gold with four assists.
  • Sarah Ericson made 10 of her 16 field goal attempts, with 4-of-7 buckets going in from beyond the arc. Teammate Erin Leary hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor.
  • STAC out-rebounded Roberts Wesleyan by a 40-35 margin, with Ericson grabbing a game-high 12 boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 12 steals, with the Redhawks turning the ball over on 18 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in four team statistical categories over Roberts Wesleyan: Points off Turnovers (16-13), Second Chance Points (9-8), Points in the Paint (34-30) and Fastbreak Points (4-2).
  • The game featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes.

ROBERTS WESLEYAN NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Georgia Haverlock led all scorers with 26 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the field and 5-for-8 from three. McCann earned a majority of her points (12) in the overtime session, where she connected three buckets from beyond the arc and hit 3-of-4 free throws.
  • Meanwhile, teammate Paris Anthony (18pts) and Marianna Freeman (13pts) each scored in double figures. Anthony shot 58.3 percent for the game.
  • Grace Galano had a strong defensive game for the Redhawks, registering team highs in rebounds (11), steals (1) and blocked shots (2).
  • STAC tried to seal the game by inbounding the ball and forcing the Redhawks to foul with seven seconds to play in the fourth quarter, however, Trinty Cheatom's pass to Sarah Ericson deflected off her leg and went out of bounds, which caused a turnover back to Roberts Wesleyan.
  • Georgia Haverlock would then sail the ball on the subsequent inbound to a wide open Madalyn Mahoney, who stroked three pointer to knot the game at 64-64 with 4.7 seconds left in regulation.
  • One last heave by Trinity Cheatom would miss the mark for STAC, sending the game to overtime.
  • Roberts Wesleyan has now won three of its last four games, following a five-game winless streak from November 18 to December 13.
