Cheatom and Ericson Score in Double Figures in 74-55 Win Over Staten Island

Sparkill, N.Y. - Trinity Cheatom and Sarah Ericson each scored in double figures on Saturday as the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team won its fourth straight, 74-55, over the College of Staten Island at Aquinas Hall.

STAC improves to 11-8 overall and 6-2 in ECC play, while CSI falls to 6-12 and 3-5.

Trinity Cheatom led the way for the Spartans, dropping a game-high 26 points, while teammate Sarah Ericson recorded 22 points.

STAC shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field, while CSI shot 29.2 percent (19-65) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Six Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Trinity Cheatom led the maroon and gold with six assists on the afternoon.
  • Cheatom hit 9 of her 15 field goal attempts, with 6-of-10 going in from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Sarah Ericson went 7-of-15 from the floor and 3-for-9 from long distance.
  • STAC out-rebounded CSI by a 45-33 margin, with Erin Leary grabbing a game-high 16 boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up eight steals, with the Dolphins turning the ball over on 15 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in four team statistical categories over Staten Island: Point off Turnovers (19-11), Second Chance Points (13-9), Points in the Paint (28-14) and Fastbreak Points (12-4).
  • The game featured one tie and three lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the contest came late in the third quarter, when Spartans led by 23 points, 56-33.
  • Sarah Ericson poured in 16 of her 22 points in the first half.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas took an eight-point advantage (30-22) into the halftime locker room.

CSI NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Dolphins logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Ashley Lambert led her team with 18 points, while teammate Dana Phelan (15pts) also scored in double digits.
  • Phelan, Kyra Rose and Elizabeth Lofaro led CSI with three assists apiece on the afternoon.
  • Lambert went 6-for-13 from the floor and 6-of-9 from three, with Phelan hitting 6 of her 16 field goal attempts.
  • Kyra Rose grabbed a team-high eight boards for the Dolphins.
  • Staten Island picked up five steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 18 separate occasions.
  • The Dolphins earned one advantage in the team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Bench Points (14-6).
  • CSI had its largest lead in the game (four points) early in the first quarter and outscored STAC 22-18 in the fourth quarter, narrowing its deficit to single digits late, before the Spartans pulled away to seal their victory.
