Women's Basketball Falls At Queens, 50-36

Queens, N.Y. - In their final road contest of the 2024-2025 season, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team dropped a 50-36 decision to Queens College on Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

STAC slips to 4-21 overall and 2-13 in ECC play, while Queens improves to 10-14 and 5-9.

Alaila Thomas posted a game-high 16 points for the maroon and gold. Meanwhile, Nkiru Awaka led the host Knights in scoring with 13 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas shot 27.5 percent from the field (14-51), while Queens shot 32.3 percent (20-62) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
  • Katie Purpura led the maroon and gold with three assists on the afternoon.
  • Alaila Thomas hit 6 of her 14 field goal attempts and 4-of-5 free throws. Meanwhile, Iyana Morel went 4-for-7 from the floor.
  • Queens out-rebounded STAC by 45-34 margin, with Morel and Pupura also grabbing a team-high seven boards apiece for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas forced five steals, with the Knights turning the ball over on 20 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over Queens: Points of Turnovers (20-17) and Bench Points (28-12).
  • The game featured one tie and four lead changes.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas trailed Queens 30-25 at the half and shot 34.4 percent (10-29) from the field, but made all five free throw attempts.
  • Alaila Thomas led all scorers with 11 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from the field.

QUEENS NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven Knights logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Nkiru Awaka led Queens with 13 points.
  • Sajol Thornhill led Queens with three assists on the day.
  • Awaka went 5-for-9 from the floor and 3-of-7 from the foul line.
  • Nkiru Awaka also grabbed a game-high 12 boards for the Knights.
  • Queens picked up 11 steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 26 separate occasions.
  • The Knights advantages in three team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Second Chance Points (9-4), Points in the Paint (32-28) and Fastbreak Points (10-4).
  • Queens had its largest lead of the game (14 points) with just under a minute to play in Saturday's contest, 50-36, on a Sajol Thornhill layup.
  • Chinyere Ukaegbu and Arianna Lopez led all Knights scorers at the half with six points each.

STAC closes out its 2024-25 campaign, hosting Mercy University on Saturday, March 1 at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans and Mavericks will tip off at 2:00 p.m., with Senior Day festivities preceding the ECC matchup.
