
Sparkill, N.Y. - Despite missing multiple players due to injury and illness, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Basketball team put together a valiant effort, but ultimately fell to the College of Staten Island 76-57 on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas Hall Gym.
STAC falls 4-19 overall and 2-11 in ECC play, while CSI improves to 18-7 and 11-2.
Cassidy Mahaney posted a team-high 17 points for the maroon and gold, while teammates Trinity Cheatom (14 points) and Karolina Jaruseviciute (13 points) also scored in double figures. Dana Phelan and Jenalyse Alarcon led all scorers with 20 points apiece for the visiting Dolphins.
STAC shot 33.3 percent from the field (19-57), while CSI shot 46.9 percent (30-64) from the floor.
STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Seven Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Liliana Kramer led the maroon and gold with two assists on the afternoon.
- Cassidy Mahaney hit 6 of her 18 field goal attempts, while Trinity Cheatom went 4-for-10 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the foul line.
- Staten Island out-rebounded STAC by a slim 39-38 margin, with Karolina Jaruseviciute grabbing a team-high nine boards for the Spartans.
- St. Thomas Aquinas forced eight steals, with the Dolphins turning the ball over on 15 separate occasions.
- St. Thomas Aquinas earned advantages in two team statistical categories over Staten Island: Second Chance Points (11-7) and Bench Points (8-7).
- The game featured one tie and one lead change.
- Staten Island led STAC 45-10 at the half, as the Spartans shot just 15.3 percent (4-26) from the field.
- Trinity Cheatom led all Spartans scorers with four first half points for the maroon and gold, while shooting 33.3 percent (2-for-6) from the field.
- STAC's best shooting quarter came in the third stanza, with the Spartans shooting 56.3 percent (9-16) from the field and 75.0 percent (3-4) from beyond the arc.
- Despite the rough first half start, STAC outscored CSI 47-31 in the second half.
STATEN ISLAND NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Eight Dolphins logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
- Dana Phelan and Jenalyse Alarcon each led Staten Island with 20 points. Teammates Kyra Rosa (10 points) and Alexa Quirolo (10 points) also scored in double figures.
- Quirolo also led Staten Island with five assists on the day.
- Phelan went 7-for-14 from the floor and 6-of-11 from long range, with Alarcon hitting 9 of her 16 field goal attempts.
- Alarcon also grabbed a game-high 12 boards for the Dolphins.
- Staten Island picked up eight steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 20 separate occasions.
- CSI had its largest lead of the game (37 points) with just under a minute to play in the second quarter, 45-8, on a Oyinkansola Oke layup.
- Staten Island earned advantages in two team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (26-17) and Points in the Paint (36-30).
- Dana Phelan led all scorers at the half with 14 points for the Dolphins, on 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) shooting from the field, with 4-of-5 (80.0 percent) shots hitting net from distance.
- CSI's best shooting quarter came in the second frame, with the Dolphins shooting 64.7 percent from the field (11-17).
