Spartans Hold Off Lions, 13-12 on Senior Day

The St. Thomas Aquinas women's lacrosse team beat Molloy College, 13-12 on Saturday afternoon's senior day game.  Grad Student Courtney McGrath completed her final home game at STAC with a strong offensive output of 5 assists and 2 goals.  McGrath scored STAC's final goal which proved to be just enough to top the Lions.  Senior Genevieve Sticnkey was a force to reckon with scoring five goals; four in the first half. 

Senior Kellie Kucinski who recently scored her 100th career STAC goal, helped the Spartans get off to another strong start, scoring three of STAC's first six goals.  Stickney's fourth goal of the day gave STAC an 8-2 lead with 10:35 to go in the half. However, the Lions finished strong with five unanswered goal making it 8-7 at the break.  

Caroline Finnen's second goal of the game gave STAC a 10-7 lead with 22:31 to go.  The Lions would not go away as Jessica Markowitz's goal brought them back within two with 20:57 remaining. Back to back goals from McGrath and Stickney gave STAC its largest lead of the second half, 12-8 with 15:21 left in the game. Molloy received two goals from Cooper Sesselman to bring them back within two.  Sesselman scored 5 goals and added 1 assist for the Lions.  

McGrath scored the Spartans final go with a little over four minutes remaining on a free position shot.  STAC was able to hold on for the win despite a late run from the Lions to bring them within one, 13-12.  Kaitlyn Lonergan had 3 saves for the Spartans who move to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in ECC play.  

Seniors Samantha Lonergan and Ruth Pluviose also played strong roles in the Spartans win as Pluviose won 4 draw controls for STAC.  The seniors were honored in a pre game ceremony recognizing their hard work and contributions to the Spartan lacrosse program.  Kucinski, Lowney, Stickney and McGrath are the Spartans top four goal scorers.  Pluviose has 10 goals and 2 assists for the season while leading STAC with 49 draw controls so far this season.  

STAC will travel to Queens on Tuesdayfor a 4:00 p.m. game.
