The St. Thomas Aquinas women's lacrosse team beat Queens, 16-10 on Saturday afternoon. Kaitlyn Gutenberger scored eight goals and added one assist for the Spartans.
The Knights got on the scoreboard first before Caroline Finnen scored back to back goals for the Spartans. Mary Pat Gibble scored her second goal for the visitors before Gutenberger added her first two to give the Spartans a 4-2 lead. The Knights rattled off the next four goals to regain the lead. Gutenberger scored just before the half ended to bring the Spartans back within one, 6-5.
After giving up an early second half goal the Spartans strung together a six straight goals to put themselves ahead, 11-7. Gutenberger and Caitlin Verber scored two each in the stretch while Gabrielle Di Fusco and Emma Notarino each added one. The Knights gave one more push with three straight goals to come within one, 11-10 but that was as close as they would get.
The Spartans added five more goals to finish out the game ahead, 16-10. Danielle Cajo scored while Verber added her third goal of the game and Gutenberger scored three more. The Spartans held a 29-23 shots advantage over Queens. Melissa Gabay had seven saves in the win. The Spartans will return to action on Friday for their final home game of the season against Stonehill at 4:00 p.m.
The Spartans honored their five seniors prior to Saturday's game; Elizabeth Cazzari, Ryan Doherty, Claudja Dorcely, Caroline Finnen and Melissa Gabay.
