Spartans Fall to Mercy 18-6 in 2021 Season Opener

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Lacrosse team opened their 2021 schedule on Wednesday, falling to Mercy College 18-6 at Mercy Field in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Danielle Cajou and Leanna Iobbi each picked up a pair of goals, while Jennifer Farrell and Arielle Rodriguez also scored for the Spartans.

The Mavericks got off to a strong start netting the first four goals of the game, before Leanna Iobbi put the Spartans on the scoreboard. Both teams traded goals, including Danielle Cajou's first of the season to make it 5-2 for the hosts from Dobbs Ferry. Mercy would then score a pair of goals, followed by Iobbi's second of the contest to make it 7-3. The Mavs chipped in two more goals before the halftime buzzer to increase their lead to six at 9-3.

In the second half, Mercy would score twice in the first minute and a half to push the score to 11-3, but Arielle Rodriguez would get one back for the Spartans to make it 11-4. Four more goals by the Mavericks put the differential at eleven with a 15-4 disadvantage, before Jennifer Farrell picked up her first of the 2021 season, making it 15-5. Mercy would go on another offensive run and net two more goals to push their lead to 17-5. Danielle Cajou would close out STAC's scoring with her second of the day and the Mavericks would seal it with one final goal in the closing moments to give them the 18-6 decision.

Laura Delorenzo (0-1) recorded 14 saves, but took the loss in goal for STAC.

Mercy had a decisive 37-17 shots advantage for the game.

STAC will travel to Caldwell University on Monday, March 15 for a 4pm non-conference matchup.
