Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans recorded its largest goal output in almost three seasons, taking a 25-13 decision over the University of the District of Columbia on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Field. STAC improves to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in the ECC standings, while UDC falls to 0-10, 0-4.

How it Happened

  • UDC opened the scoring in the first quarter, before the Spartans rattled off three straight goals from Leanna Iobbi, Micaela Ross and Danielle Cajou to jump ahead on the scoreboard, 3-1.
  • The Firebirds then scored three of the next four goals to tie the game at 4-4, with Alexa Paternoster tallying the lone goal for the maroon and gold.
  • Olivia Cerbo and Leanna Iobbi closed the scoring in the opening stanza to give STAC a 6-4 advantage through 15 minutes of action.
  • Second quarter action saw the Spartans tally the first nine goals of the frame, as Jennifer Stevens (2), Danielle Cajou (2), Leanna Iobbi (2), Micaela Ross (2), and Alexa Paternoster all found the back of the net to increase the STAC lead to 15-4.
  • Goalie Colleen Stevens was honored midway through the second quarter for making her 100th career save in her first season as the Spartans' netminder.
  • District of Columbia got back within 10 (15-5) on a goal in the last 90 seconds before halftime. However, Micaela Ross answered with her fourth of the afternoon to make it 16-5 at the intermission.
  • Third quarter action saw UDC mount a comeback of sorts, scoring six of the eight goals in the period, with Leanna Iobbi and Julia Reggio helping to keep the margin on the scoreboard at seven (18-11) for St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • A brief break between quarters seemed to re-energize the Spartans, as they outscored UDC 7-2 in the final stanza. Micaela Ross and Jennifer Stevens tallied goals, before the Firebirds were able to get a pair of their own to make it a 20-13 affair. STAC then was able to strike five more times to close the contest, as Leanna Iobbi, Julia Reggio, Jennifer Stevens and Danielle Cajou (2) all found the scoresheet again to give the hosts the 25-13 triumph.
