STAC Women's Lacrosse Scores Early and Often in 21-3 Victory Over UDC

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Lacrosse team raced out to an 11-0 first quarter lead on Saturday, as the Spartans downed the University of the District of Columbia, 21-3 at Spartan Field.

STAC moves to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in ECC play, while UDC falls to 0-9 and 0-3.

Ella Entress led the Spartans' offense with five goals and an assist, while teammate Olivia Cerbo tallied five goals on the afternoon. Hailey Galison scored four goals and added two helpers and Katelyn Cerrato picked up three goals and four assists. Arianna Tribble (2 goals, 1 assist), Rachael Paraskos (1 goal) and Meghan Tarantino (1 goal) also added to the totals on the scoresheet for the maroon and gold. Goalie Lilah Magenheimer (W, 4-8) started between the pipes for STAC and stopped 3 of 6 shots faced to pick up her fourth win in 12 tries.

Meanwhile, UDC received its offense from Najee Gunter, Michelle Mitchell and Shanise Taylor, who scored a goal apiece. Goalie Natalia Perkins (L, 0-5) made 11 saves on 32 total shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • STAC scored early and often in the opening stanza, racing out to an 11-0 advantage through the first 15 minutes of action. Ella Entress (4), Olivia Cerbo (2), Hailey Galison (2), Meghan Tarantino (1), Katelyn Cerrato (1) and Arianna Tribble (1) all brought their A games early to push the match to a running clock.
  • Rachael Paraskos and Olivia Cerbo would kick off the second quarter, tallying two more goals to extend the Spartans' lead to 13-0.
  • UDC finally broke the shutout on the scoreboard with a Shanise Taylor goal to make it a 13-1 game with six and a half minutes to play before halftime.
  • The maroon and gold would close the first half scoring with goals by Olivia Cerbo and Katelyn Cerrato to keep the hosts rolling, 15-1 at the break.
  • When the teams returned to the field for third quarter action, it would be more of the same from the Spartans, as back-to-back-to-back strikes from Hailey Galison (2) and Ella Entress pushed the score to 18-1.
  • Michelle Mitchell responded for the Firebirds with a goal of her own to cut the deficit to 16 at 18-2.
  • Arianna Tribble ended the frame by scoring her second of the day in the closing seconds to put STAC ahead 19-2.
  • STAC entered the fourth quarter with early goals by Olivia Cerbo and Katelyn Cerrato to close the Spartans' scoring on the afternoon with 21 total goals, making it 21-2.
  • A final UDC goal by Najee Gunter in the final five minutes narrowed the gap on the scoreboard to 21-3, but the maroon and gold would ultimately take the 18-goal triumph.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: 

  • STAC outshot UDC 45-8 (32-6 on goal) for the game.
  • Hailey Galison tallied a game-high nine shots, with six going on net for St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • Galison also gathered 13 of the Spartans 33 ground balls and caused five Firebirds turnovers.
  • STAC won 20 of 26 draw controls on the afternoon, Katelyn Cerrato taking seven and Arianna Tribble six.
