Spartans Defeat Cross Town Foe Dominican

Biolsi Sparks 3-2 Victory

The STAC women's soccer team beat cross town rival Dominican College 3-2.  This decisive win couldn't have come at a more opportune time, giving the Spartans some momentum as they begin conference play on Wednesday.  Leading scorer Katherine Dapolito scored the first goal of the game twenty-five minutes into play off an assist by Liz Gronwoldt.

Dapolito's goal, which marks her ninth of the season, came off a pass from Gronwoldt which she shot into the far corner of the net past the Chargers goalkeeper.  The Spartans outshot Dominican 11-7 in the 1st half with Dapolito taking 6 of those shot attempts.

STAC continued to pressure the Chargers defense in the second half.  Sophomore Nicole Biolsi beat two defenders to get a shot off on goal that went wide and was recovered by freshmen Christine Kennelly who shot it into the net.  A few minutes later Kennelly took a shot on goal that was deflected away by the Chargers goalkeeper, Valentina Sturchio, and recovered by Biolsi, who scored the third Spartan goal.  Spartan captain Stacey Samora did an outstanding job recovering and distributing the ball to her teammates.

The game remained 3-0 until Dominican's Rosa Centurion scored a long shot over the head of STAC goalkeeper Cynthia Campion with 2:08 remaining into the game.  The goal sparked the Chargers who came back firing as senior Angela Correia got out on a breakaway and scored off a strong shot into the near corner just out of Campion's reach.  The Chargers had one more good look at the net off an indirect kick that went wide with less then thirty seconds remaining.

Despite the two late goals the Spartans received solid defensive play from freshmen Kayla Hubela who steered away many off the Dominican attackers.  Junior Renee Remmers had a strong performance off the bench limiting the Chargers shots on goal.  Goalkeeper Cynthia Campion recorded four saves for the Spartans.

STAC will be back in action at home against conference opponent Dowling College at 3:30pm on Wednesday.  The game will be played at North Rockland Soccer Complex.
