Late Goals Lift STAC Women's Soccer at Bloomfield, 2-1

A pair of tallies in the final 11 minutes of regulation lifted the St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Bloomfield College. Danielle Stam recorded a goal and an assist and Vicky Saravia netted the winner with under seven minutes remaining to give the Lady Spartans their second straight victory and fourth in their last six games.

STAC now stands at 5-9-1 overall, with the Deacons falling to 4-11. The total of five victories matches the highest mark for the women's soccer program since the 2007 season, with one game remaining.

The evening contest was a tight battle throughout, with both sides recording six shots in a scoreless first half. Bloomfield wasted little time getting on the board after the break, with Mickie Bradley assisting on a goal by Michelle Cadena at 49:46.

With the minutes ticking away, the hosts appeared in charge until Stam, inserted in the game as a late replacement, made her mark. She converted an assist from Becky Torres at 79:04 to deadlock the affair, and with the Deacons still reeling, assisted on Saravia's game winner at 83:24.

Amanda Volpe made four saves in all to preserve the lead for the Lady Spartans, while Bloomfield netminder Sashagay Spence saved five shots in absorbing the setback.

St. Thomas Aquinas will hope to carry that momentum into its Senior Day finale, this Saturday, October 27, when they host Mercy College in a 12:30 pm start at Eugene Levy Park. The game will be the front end of a double-header which will see the men's teams in action at approximately 2:30 pm.
