STAC Women's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw with Mercy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team paid tribute to its seniors in their final game of the season and played to a 0-0 tie at Eugene Levy Park. The Lady Spartans complete the season by going 4-2-1 over their final seven games, ending with a 5-9-2 overall record and 0-6-2 in East Coast Conference play.

Pre-game festivities on Senior Day saluted Lady Spartans Beckey Torres and Michelle Dugan, and the first half was an evenly-played affair with Mercy holding a 4-1 advantage in shots at the break. The visitors turned up the pressure in the next 45 with a 12-5 shots edge, but Amanda Volpe made seven of her nine saves in the second half to send the contest into extra time.

STAC did have an opportunity when Mercy's Hannah Ritchie was sent off for a red card in the final minute of regulation, forcing the Mavericks to play short thereafter. In the end, it was Volpe recording her first solo shutout of the season, with Mercy's Stephanie DiLegge credited with two saves in the clean sheet for Mercy.

The Lady Spartans total of five victories matched their highest mark since the 2007 season, and with the new Spartan Field set to be ready for action in 2013, things are surely looking up for the program.
