Lady Spartans Soccer Team Downed at NYIT, 3-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College women's soccer team was defeated by New York Institute of Technology, 3-0, at Old Westbury on Saturday. The Lady Spartans now drop to 1-7-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the East Coast Conference, with NYIT improving to 4-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in conference action.

While NYIT had the advantage in possession early on, neither team threatened seriously until Natali Arana found Wendy Avendano, who rifled a perfectly placed shot from just outside the box that hit the crossbar and dropped over the goal line at 35:48.

STAC took more of the initiaitve in the second half in pressing for the equalizer, but a pair of later markers but the game away for the hosts. Sina Windmueller took a feed from Natasha Arana and came in alone on Lady Spartans keeper Amanda Volpe to make it 2-0 at 72:24. Minutes later, Natali Arana sealed the deal with a pretty shot inside the far post at 84:48.

NYIT enjoyed a slim 11-10 advantage in shots, and Volpe was credited with two saves while Bears netminder Brianna Bollettieri recorded five saves to earn the shutout.

STAC's women's soccer team returns to action this Monday, October 8, when they travel to play Washington Adventist in a non-conference tilt at 4:00, before resuming ECC conference play at Queens College on Sunday, October 14.
